What a beautiful state park. Although I noted that the showers and restrooms weren't clean this is due more to tracking in of dirt than long-term grime. My pet peeve is that the showers were angled in such a weird way that you had to squeeze into the wall to get water on your body. All the campers were quiet even over Labor Day weekend. The camp personnel were helpful in sorting out my mistake in booking the wrong amp site online. We needed 30 amp and the one we arrived at was 20 amp. The campground is far removed from the rest of the scenic parts of the park so every day we had an 8 mile drive north to the waterfalls. This was our first experience with no water hook-up on our site but that turned out to be no problem at all, just filled our tank at the common spigot as needed. We got along with no internet, no TV although found a Wi-Fi signal at the Burlingham bookstore in town of Perry (one of the several entrances in/out of the park. Dinner at Glen Iris Inn was expensive but we'd do it again. At the end of our camping trip we spent a night at Country Inn & Suites in Mount Morris. They charge a lot $129 because they are the only game in town but we did our laundry, watched US Open Tennis and surfed the internet to our hearts delight.
Good: sewer hook-up on-site, quiet campers even in an overcrowded park, ice cream available on site until 10 p.m. Bad: shower facility closed (not temporarily) leaving one shower for 250 sites. Our site was far away from the only one available and it was raining with too many puddles to walk there. No way possible to drive there due to incredible overcrowding. So many vehicles, boats, golf carts, etc that someone had to move their truck for us to even get into our spot. Bigger rigs than ours (21 foot) should stay away. The overcrowding is a real safety issue. We would not return unless there was no other choice.
I agree with the previous poster that the owners are extremely rude (and we don't have children that they were rude to them about). They get away with their high prices for few amenities because there are few other choices in the area. I dearly hope Ramblers Rest upgrades and put these "boys" out of business. Campsites have very little charm. The ONLY value is it's location on the water and next to the cool restaurant (where the food is merely OK, the location is it's saving grace). We could not wait to check out and will never return. Note: stayed there Mar 2008 not 2009 (data entry would not allow 2008 date)
For a place without a lot of amenities the price is a bit high but here aren't a lot of CG choices in the area due to Hurricane Ike. We were given lock codes to access the showers and gym. The gym door never opened. Showers are individual and are not spic and span, I killed a small roach and saw mold under the sink (kick plate) although my husband didn't see it in his. Almost full occupancy but very quiet. Expansion going on, looks like they bought the RV camp next door, new concrete pads being poured. Cabins available for non-RV'ers. Located near Super Target and Home Depot. We had a great steak dinner at T-Bone Tom's in Kemah very nearby. Not cheap, not dressy, great steak.
We stayed here arriving late on a rainy night and left the next morning. Charley is a great host. We called as we were on the way, he took our reservation with the addendum that we could call to cancel with no charge by 6 pm. Nice customer service we haven't found elsewhere. Good Wi-Fi, better than most. Our site (#11) was not level based on where we had to park to attach up. Maybe it was the rain, the site was gravel rock. Nice touch was personal trash receptacle at out site. The price was right for an on-the-road stay. We ate at Ed's Seafood about 8 miles away, fresh but a little salty. Food close to CG is fast food.
Great location off I-10 and a pretty river location. Not that beautiful yet because trees are small. Don't know how it is described as shaded. The bathrooms and showers are the finest we've seen and they are attached to a meeting room that offered Thanksgiving meal (bring something to contribute) and on the Tues night we were there they had homemade chicken soup. Owners live on site which is a real plus. Everything is new. Only downside is that it is next to the feeder road to I-10 which might be noisier in the summer with open windows. We were next to the road with a tree/bush barrier and didn't hear a thing in November. Sewer hookup at every site.
